Effective Date: August 3, 2018
Remember in elementary school, there was always that one person who ruined parachute day by flapping the fabric so hard that it sprained little Susie's finger? Don't be that person. Let's all agree to a few ground rules so we all can experience The Skrive.
Skrivers are natural-born storytellers, persuaders, leaders, activists, artists, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, poets, musicians, builders and creators. We all constantly investigate, research and question the status quo.
So let's all agree to disagree but above all else maintain an inclusive, community-first environment where we allow wide range of people and stories to exist. To do this, we have to prohibit certain conduct.
Each Skriver is responsible for maintaining and promoting these standards. (Remember to use your upvotes or downvotes, people! ) At a certain point posts will fall below the acceptable ratio of downvotes and disappear from the feed.
But only The Skrive Staff will decide if a person has violated the rules. We will look at the content, context, newsworthiness and the nature of the information. If applicable, we will consider privacy laws.
Violations of rules could result in account restrictions or post removal. In appropriate cases, we will consider account deletion.
Threats of Violence and Incitement
We do not allow content or actions that threaten, encourage, or incite violence against anyone, directly or indirectly.
We do not allow content that directly or indirectly promotes violence or hatred against people based on characteristics like race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, disease, age, sexual orientation, gender, or gender identity.
We do not allow posts or accounts that glorify, celebrate, downplay, or trivialize violence, suffering, abuse, or deaths of individuals or groups. This includes the use of scientific, pseudoscientific, historical or pseudohistorical claims to pathologize, dehumanize, or disempower others. We do not allow calls for intolerance, exclusion, or segregation based on protected characteristics, nor do we allow the glorification of groups which do any of the above.
The Skrive exists to cultivate, create and connect area voices. We don't tolerate harassment, which includes, among other things:
- Bullying, threatening, or shaming someone, or posting things likely to encourage others to do so
- Posting copies of private communications between private individuals without the explicit consent of all parties to the communication
- Doxing, which includes not only private or obscure personal information but also the aggregation of publicly available information to target, shame, blackmail, harass, intimidate, threaten, or endanger
- Posting intimate or explicit images taken or posted without the subject's express consent
- We do not allow posts or accounts that engage in on-platform or cross-platform campaigns of targeting, harassment, hate speech, violence, or disinformation.
We do not allow you to post content in which you claim to be a person other than who you are. We also require you to provide accurate information about yourself when you register on our platform.
We do not allow spam on The Skrive or in our newsletters. (We also haven't found a recipe where we like it on our plates.)
Spam will be removed from The Skrive either by Editors or through the community voice. (Be sure to report content that you believe to be spam). A notification will be sent to the Skrive Editor and she will decide if this content needs to be removed permanently and/or further moderated. (Downvotes are power but don't forget to show the love too.)
While it is hard to define "spam" precisely or completely, here are some representative behaviors that are characteristic of spam:
- Performing a disproportionately large number of interactions, particularly by automated means. This includes bulk, indiscriminate interactions, such as following of other accounts (follow spam) clapping, or highlighting
- Repeatedly using comments as a method of promotion
- Participating in bounty campaigns or brigades to artificially inflate rankings for posts, accounts, businesses, or products
Bad Actors and Suspected Bots
The Skrive is managed by passion-filled people, but the platform is also influenced by its collected voice through comments, upvotes and downvotes. So, we work to root out any artificial behaviors that skew this system and degrade or distort other users' experiences as a result.
Such behaviors include:
- Buying, selling, or trading in accounts or account interactions
- Registering accounts, posting content, or interacting with users or content artificially, automatically, systematically, or programmatically
- Reposting articles verbatim from different sites or blogging platforms without permission of the author
- Reposting articles verbatim when they are published on other news or media sites
- Using sweeping generalizations - like using “The Media” as a stand-in term for irresponsible reporting - without providing evidence or siting a variety and at times apolitical sources.
Copyright and Trademark Infringement
Respect the copyrights and trademarks of others. Unless you're authorized to use someone else's copyrighted work or trademark (either expressly or by legal exceptions and limitations like fair use), don't do it. We respond to notices of alleged infringement as described in our Terms of Service, Copyright and DMCA Policy, and Trademark Policy.
We believe our users to a fault, but if your content has been reported, then we will review it to see if is guilty of any of the following:
We do not allow pornographic images or videos. We do allow erotic writing and non-graphic erotic images, provided that all subjects are adults of legal age and that no illegal conduct is described or depicted. We do not allow gratuitously graphic or disturbing media, even if it's not pornographic.

We do not allow content that violates others' privacy, including personally identifying or confidential information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, non-public phone numbers, physical addresses, email addresses, or other non-public information.

The Skrive cultivates a network of storytellers who live their truth. Create, share, learn and grow. This platform encourages creativity with digital media so our editorial guidelines are flexible, and left to your interpretation.
In order to serve its communities, The Skrive supports and empowers both experienced creators and those who are just starting out. The Skrive's platform fosters creativity, relationships and agency among its readers and contributors. We celebrate each other, unique points of view and engaging experiences. Stories are the keys to connection, change and community.
Here are some editorial guidelines and best practices we suggest.
Variety Welcome and Area Voices Needed
Inclusivity equals all types of thinkers, writers, and storytellers contribute to The Skrive. Topics focuses on first-hand experiences covering every topic under the sun. So if you have an idea to share respectfully, it's welcome to be published or even featured on the platforum.
Topics you care deeply about make the best stories, and we encourage honest and intricate storytelling— whether that comes from real-world experience, conversational insights, original research, or reporting in the field.
Describe who you are and what you do by filling out your profile. Showcase your brand or debut new niches when asked to become a Senior Skriver. Senior Skrivers are the leaders of our story-powered community. They can brand their profiles with specific videos and colors.
Digital media comes in all shapes and sizes. Tell your story with in GIFS only or a series of Tweets. Create a page to list podcast episodes. Feature vlogs by embedding videos from social media. (Raise your hand if you're on IGTV ✋) Show a slideshow of photos or promote a livestream. When creating stories that will become digital folklore, the possibilities are endless.
Sorry, it does. We won't mark any stories with red ink, but stories are policed by the community. We accept internet slang but failing to use their/there/they're correctly will likely hinder the stories and your content's niche. Need references? Check out apstylebook.com.
Headlines, Links and Tags
Use an appropriate title and subtitle to best reflect your idea and to help promote it in post listings on and off the platform. We strongly recommend scanning for typos before publishing and sharing.
Headlines are in Title Case where the first word, the last word and all important words are capitalized. What's "important"?
In most cases, they include the following words:
- Adjectives (beautiful, large, hopeful)
- Adverbs (forcefully, silently, hurriedly)
- Nouns (computer, table, manuscript)
- Pronouns (they, she, he)
- Subordinating conjunctions (as, so, that)
- Verbs (write, type, create)
You can tag your stories with tags to help readers find your work. Popular tags will come up as they are typed. Accurately and carefully tagging your post will increase its potential distribution and exposure to the right audience.
Profiles with one or more quality images relevant to the content perform better both on The Skrive and when shared on other networks.
Double-check to make sure you're not violating copyright or licensing with your images. When you're short on time, search The Skrive's stock photo library. Find the library Free resources like Pexels, Pixabay, and Unsplash are great for sourcing Creative Commons-licensed images.
Ghosting Not Allowed
If you receive responses to your post, engage with your readers by responding to them and applauding for their responses, where appropriate. (You can also hide or report responses you feel are inappropriate or violate our rules.)
Transparency in Promotion
Stories should not exist with the predominant purpose of driving traffic to an external website, business, or product. All included content must be relevant, substantial and informative. If you have received compensation or free goods/services in connection with the topic of a post, you must make this clear.
If you do include calls to action, make sure they are clear and easy to understand and actionable. As a general rule of thumb, offer people value before asking for engagement.
All stories you publish should adhere to our existing Rules, and attempt to follow these additional content requirements.
Cross-posting content you have published elsewhere is allowed provided it follows the aforementioned copyright guidelines.
If you see any piece of content that violates these rules and guidelines, please report the post or send a link of the post to email@example.com.
